Even before we started our digipak we knew that it was massively important to get feedback for everything we designed. To do this we would upload everything we made to www.postimage.org and send it to every member of our focus group. This helped us greatly in the end as it meant that every negative response we received about our drafts helped us to change the digipak for the better. Uploading to this site saved us a lot of time as we didn’t have to print out the digipak and give it to each member of the focus group, all we had to do was send an email to all of the focus group.
These are some of the quotes that we received from our focus group:
- “I like the idea of 3 of the same person in the room but it doesn’t seem bright enough.”
- “The title takes over the picture, maybe put it in one of the corners and make the font a little smaller.”
- “Really like it but I would probably make the font smaller.”
After receiving this feedback we decided to put an effect on the picture, we picked an effect that would brighten the image up the most. We also changed the saturation levels in the image to get the brightness levels exactly where we wanted them. This made the album cover look a lot better. We then moved the title to many different places on the picture to see where it would look the best and we found that the top left corner was the best place to put the title. We also changed the size of it as one of our focus group members mentioned that this would be a good idea.
This is the final image that we created. We then showed this to our focus group.
These are some quotes that we received from our focus group:
- “Love the effect, make sure you keep that effect running through your digipak.”
- “Font looks loads better there, also really like the effect.”
- “Looking loads brighter, effect looks pretty good too.”
After making the front cover we started making our inserts. The first one we made was the CD slot, we used the fan from the front cover as it was the perfect shape for the CD, and it also linked our front cover to our insert. We handed this to our focus group in a different way to all of our other pictures. For this we made 4 different versions of the image and asked our focus group which one they thought was the best image, we then used the one that gained the most votes.
These are the 4 versions. We also asked the focus group to say why this one was their favourite.
Version 1.
Version 2.
Version 3.
Version 4.
80% of our focus group voted for version 3 so this is the picture that chose for our digipak.
These are some quotes that we received from our focus group about version 3:
- “The effects on number 3 fits in with your front cover the best.”
- “I don’t like how number one doesn’t have the album name on the sticker, go with number 3.”
- “Use number 3, effect doesn’t look strong enough in number 2.”
Finally we started to make the other insert. For this picture we wanted to use a screwed up picture of the boy and the girl when they were in a relationship. The reason we wanted to have the screwed up effect on this image was that we have a clip in the video where the boy screws up a picture of the couple when they were together, therefore making this insert link with the video.
This is a draft that we made to hand out to our focus group:
One member of the focus group said “I like the effect you have done with the screwed up paper but I’m not sure about the picture.” Instead of going out and taking a new picture, we decided to use the actual picture that the boy rips off his wall in his room. Doing this linked this insert directly back to the video.
This was the picture we ended up with:
We kept the effect the same as the front cover and other insert so that it didn’t look out of place on the digipak.
